Product Description Combining rich illustrations and authentic exercises, How English Works makes the learning and practising of grammar both a pleasure and a challenge. The author's imaginative and wholly original approach to the presentation and organisation of their text offers students a lively, purposeful package to give them a confident command of English forms and their uses. Designed for students working on their own, but also ideal for use in class, How English Works covers all the key elements in the standard EFL grammar syllabus, and many other topics which are often ignored.

Not the Greatest April 27, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
"How English Works" is an ok exercise and grammar book, though not without some points that are problematic.
The explanations for different grammar points and structures are well written and fairly easy to grasp for the most part. The book covers a large range of grammar points, and this is definitely something in favour of it. However, so do other books of a similar type.
The exercises are very limited, giving only a small amount of practice for each structure and form. In some cases, a lot was sacrificed for the sake of some excellent presentation, such as full colour pictures and so on. This lack of depth in the exercises means that students may have to supplement this book with another.
Overall, the "How English Works" is not a bad book, but I think there are better out there. This book would be good as a supplement to other books, or perhaps for a reference for students. However, I would not recommend it above all others.
i love it :) July 2, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love this book, it's really easy to use and read. I think it covers all you can imagine about English and it has a lot of exercises. I recommend this book for beginners and intermediate level. It can also be very useful for somebody that want to reinforce his/her English level.
What a practice book must be! January 8, 2003 18 out of 20 found this review helpful
I am very glad to see that this book is rated 5 stars here in amazon.com, for my opinion is that such book is a most perfect one for purposes of grammar practice of the English language. What really should be noticed is that, usually, the more advanced the book is, the more tiring it is for the student to read; but the previous logic does not apply to this one! I feel a great pleasure in reading it and doing its exercises mainly because of one very important caracteristic that every didatic book should embody: the abundance of visual elements, especially the little comic strips and the numerous strong sayings uttered by various famous people, which are spread profusely throughout the book. Its visually rich and coloured pages shall, most certainly, banish the usual boredom that students feel in studying grammar, and please, future reader, do not worry; the contents of the book are also very rich, and I may assure any purchaser in potential that this book doesn't lack any important information; it is a thorough coverage for students who wish to get more fluent in written and spoken language alike.
Clear, Simple and Readable! May 11, 2001 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
I easily get bored when i read english grammar books, but with this book grammar become more enjoying and easy to understand. Before going through grammar lessons you can test your grammar by questions and know your weak points. You can use it as starter book for english grammar and as reference. It is very clear, simple, readable and contains some colorful cartoons. With each topic there is tasks and excercises. I highly recommend it for intermediate students.
Grammar book for high intermediate students November 18, 1999 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
A very clear book. It's great at explaination, short on excercises- but it does have an answer key. Too few excercises for a text, but a great refrence for teachers and ESL students.
