Product Description The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT*), published by Riverside Publishing, a Houghton Mifflin Company, Primary Edition tests are commonly given to students in kindergarten and first grade (and sometimes students in second grade), although it depends on what test your school/program provides and the test level that they use for your grade level. The questions in the K - 2 level tests are read to the students by a test administrator and the answers are in picture format. This practice test contains six tests in the three test areas found on the CogAT* Primary Edition exams:VERBALOral Vocabulary 20 questionsVerbal Reasoning 20 questionsQUANTITATIVERelational Concepts 20 questionsQuantitative Concepts 20 questionsNONVERBALFigure Classification 20 questionsMatrices 20 questionsPractice Test for the CogAT* Primary Edition is a full length practice test with answer key. The object of this practice test is to familiarize your child with the types of questions they will face on test day, how the tests are formatted, the symbols used and the number of questions in in each test area. However, since this practice test has not been standardized with Riverside Publishing and the actual CogAT* test, a valid CogAT* test score cannot be concluded from their results on this practice test. * CogAT is a registered trademark of Houghton Mifflin Company. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is owned by Houghton Mifflin Company and published by Riverside Publishing, a Houghton Mifflin Company. Neither Houghton Mifflin Company nor Riverside Publishing was involved in the production of, nor endorses, these practice tests.

Provides good practice items similar to the actual test, but rather sparse October 25, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a very slim volume of sample items similar to those found on the CogAT Primary Edition, which your child is likely to take sometime in 1st grade. This is a good "intro" for your child if he or she hasn't seen the kind of questions that appear on the test. The book is organized into six sections that replicate the test sections (Figure Classification, Matrices, etc.). There are only about 20 questions in each section, and your child will likely be able to go through the entire book in less than a week, even if you only spend about 20 minutes a night. Our child did this not long prior to taking the actual exam and reported that indeed, the items were similar. Overall, this book is helpful in familiarizing a child and giving them some brief practice, which should help reduce possible test anxiety due to never having seen these kinds of questions. The down side is that the book is very small and the limited number of items provided means that there's simply not much practice. In my opinion, this book would have been far more useful for preparation if it had two or three times as many test items. In addition, while the figures and drawings on the actual test are large and readable, in this book they have been shrunk to a tiny size -- apparently to keep the page size small and also minimize the number of pages. In some cases, the figures are so small, it's easy to make an error because you can't tell what it's supposed to be! My recommendation for future editions of this book are: include at least 240 or even 360 sample questions (rather than 120), and print the book with font and graphics at least 50% larger! At present, the size of the book and limited number of questions make the $25 price unjustifiable.
It's very helpful. October 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book simulates the actual test in most parts. It helped my daughter to get used to the format of the test and know what to expect from the test. My daughter did quite well on the practice tests at home with this book. She scored pretty high on nonverbal and math sections. But she didn't do very well on the verbal part. I think the actual test is more difficult than the book presented on the verbal section.
Very bad return experience with Mercer Publishing October 12, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have ordered this book a week ago, when I got the book, I noticed the contents are the same as one of the packages my kid has been doing at afterschool club. So, I called Amazon customer service, they asked me to contact the book's Mercer Publishing directly. So, I emailed them, and followed the instruction, wrapped it carefully, and returned as a certified mail. When Mercer got it, they emailed me back, but told me "We received your return. Unfortunately, the book is not in new condition and we cannot accept it for return, as outlined in our previous email to you. There are several options for you to sell used books, including Half Price Books, eBay and Amazon. We apologize for your misunderstanding of our policy."
I have barely read the book, how come they said it is not in the new condition, are they selling me a new book or used book at first place? If they cannot accept return at the first place, don't waste my postage for a return.
Wonderful resource for parents March 28, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
I would highly recommend this book if your child is taking the CogAT exam. My daughter has a high degree of test anxiety and her school provided us very little information about what would be on the exam. This book is a very close match to what my daughter saw on the exam. I don't have the test results back, but I'm sure she did much better on it than she would of without this resource.
